The transmission fluid and filter on the VW DSG automatic transmission should be changed at 80,000 miles. The sump capacity is six (6) quarts with a cost of $22.50 per quart. The charge for this service at a VW service center is $350.00 to $400.00. This repair can easily be done by the DIY or TDI owner. The below discussion and photos shows the TDI Guy changing the fluid and filter.
-
Place the transmission lever in neutral.
-
Set the parking brake.
-
Place a memory keeper device in the cigar lighter of the vehicle to retain the engine management settings in the memory of the ECM.
-
Using ramps or a lifting device, raise the vehicle to a safe working height.
-
To access the fluid filter, the cranking battery has to be removed.
-
Using hose clamp pliers, remove the intake air hose and harness to MAF sensor. (Figure 25-1).

-
Remove the negative cable attached to to the battery post. The cable is attached by a spring clamp. The TDI Guy uses a pry bar and large flat-blade screwdriver to remove the negative cable. Figure 25-3 shows the cable being removed from the cranking battery on the 2006 Jetta TDI.

Install new fluid filter. Install cap and torque to 18-ftlb.
-
Using a 1/2-inch square drive 14mm hex bit socket and 1/2-inch square drive breaker bar, remove the bolt to the transmission pan.
-
Drain the dirty transmission fluid in a oil or transmission drain pan.
-
The transmission requires six (6) quarts of fluid.
-
There are two (2) methods that technician's use to fill the DSG transmission. Fluid can be added to the filter housing. Using this method is time consuming. The fluid is slow in making its way to the sump pan.
-
Professional technician's use a special fill hose and adapter to fill the sump pan. It is not available from VW. The adapter screws into the sump pan fill and drain hole (Figure 25-8). The fill hose and adapter can be ordered from World Impex.

The opposite end of the fill hose fitting is attached to the new fluid container and inverted.
-
Figure 25-9 shows the TDI Guy squeezing an inverted fluid container to refill the transmission. This action pushes the new fluid into the sump pan from the bottom of vehicle.
