Removing the headliner (for antenna replacement)

This is on a 2002 Golf

  • First remove the trim piece from the very rear of the headliner, you can pull it off by hand, no tools.
  • Remove the little white plastic piece in the center of the now exposed headliner
  • Pull down the top of the c pillar trim plates, your fingers should be plenty of force
  • Gently nudge the headliner away from the c pillar trims now, until the headliner is backed out to the door, this should give you plenty of access to the antenna.
  • Remove the antenna (3/4 socket)

More antenna advice

From MoGolf's excellent Yahoogroup post:

If you get corrosion at the base of the antenna, then your roof panel is rusting away. The antenna base has a signal amplifier in it. You can use VAG-COM to query the radio for amplifier status. If water has entered the base of the antenna it can cause deterioration of the electronic components. Anticorrosion/anti-oxidation gunk will not help. It will have to be replaced. The nut that holds the antenna base to the roof actually has a washer component with teeth that grip the roof as you tighten it. If you have been removing the rod from the base for any reason, then you've opened the possibility for oxidation to occur at that point. That is an area that could be cleaned and anticorrosion/anti-oxidation might help, but don't count on big improvement. The amplifier gets power by 12V being sent through the antenna cable. That's why you need a cable adapter if you put in an aftermarket head unit. Most head units do not provide this power and without a working amplifier the signal will be weak. As I recall, you can also get aftermarket antennas without the amplifier in the base.
